From the person to the character: revealing the narrative and discursive constructedness at work in characterization

Angela Carter's « The Fall River Axe Murder » is about the murder committed by Lizzie Borden which was widely reported in the newspapers of the time, mainly in the news items page. Even though Lizzie was a real historical person, her representation in Carter's short story draws the reader's attention to the narrative and discursive constructedness of the character, and underlines the nature of representation as a textual experiment widely different from the historical experience. While the news item highlights the otherness of its subjects, Carter's short story presents him/her as a character in conflict with patriarchy. The narrative options adopted by these two narrative genres are at the origin of the metamorphoses of the person into a character.
